On Monday, the Utah County Sheriff's Office recovered the body of a man who was trapped in an avalanche in Pole Canyon, located northwest of Cedar Fort. According to Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon, two men were snowmobiling in the area when one of them was caught and buried in the avalanche near Lewiston Peak. Cannon described the avalanche as "extremely large" and said that it occurred in an open bowl area of the mountain at an elevation of 8,000 feet, spanning an estimated 1,500 feet. The snowmobilers likely accessed the area from the Tooele County side of the mountain, which is not heavily trafficked due to most of the land being privately owned. The victim, a 38-year-old man, was buried in over 22 feet of snow and was found deceased later that night after a search was conducted by teams transported to the area by a Life Flight and a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter. The man's identity has not been disclosed by investigators.
